Course Description
This six-week course builds practical digital skills for veterans, aligned with IC3 GS6 Level 2. Five weeks cover everyday technology, information, content creation, communication, collaboration and safety. A sixth week extends that learning through basic AI-assisted web app building.
For veterans who can use a mouse and keyboard, open a browser and manage basic files. Level 1 or equivalent experience is recommended. Ask the instructor for a refresher when needed.
Learning Outcomes (IC3 GS6 Level 2 + VUB Extension)
- Adjust device and browser settings for a task, then restore them. Create a practice appointment and choose what others can see. Pick the right connection and printer, and preview before printing. Check what an automatic feature changed before you accept it. Ask for help clearly and give useful feedback.
- Write a clear search and narrow it with one filter. Judge whether a source fits your question, and record where you found it. Fill in an online form with only what is needed, and read the confirmation. Save a file with a clear name in a folder you can find, and pack it in a ZIP file. Choose who can view, comment or edit, and pick the right way to get a file back.
- Give a Word handout real headings and numbered steps, and check them in the Navigation Pane. Save the handout as a PDF so it looks the same on any computer. Add costs in Excel with a SUM formula and check that the total updates. Make a one-slide PowerPoint flyer with a theme and a cropped, credited photo.
- Write a clear email request with the day and time in the subject, and use words that welcome everyone. Choose who goes in To and who goes in Bcc. Give, answer and resolve a comment on one shared Word copy. Check an offer for when it ends, what it costs, how often you pay and how to cancel.
- Add words or patterns so color is never the only clue, in an Excel sign-in sheet and on charts. Secure a new account with a long password used nowhere else and two-step verification. Check a suspicious message a safer way, using a number or site you already trust instead of the link or phone number in the message.
- Test version 1 of a small resource-finder app. Write a clear request for an AI agent. Review and test version 2, the one the agent made, which broke uppercase searches. Write a bug report and retest the repaired version 3. Review weeks 1 to 5 together, then take the post-test.
How We Will Learn
Each meeting combines demonstration, a short captioned explainer, guided practice, individual tasks, partner feedback and a check for understanding. Use fictional examples throughout. In the final week the instructor demonstrates an AI coding agent; learners write the request, review the change and test it, with no account or AI access of their own.

Assessment & Materials
The Pre-Test (Week 1) occurs before instruction; the Post-Test (Week 6) follows the GS6 lessons and the course review. Each has 20 questions across the seven IC3 domains, with the same counts on both forms, and produces a graded results PDF and submits a copy for the instructor through Netlify. The tests use different questions covering the same skills. The Week 6 app practice is checked through its My result page, not scored. Scores guide practice; they are not certification results.
Materials: A workstation, browser, headphones, word processor, spreadsheet app and plain-text editor support the activities. Captions, transcripts, keyboard navigation, text sizing and print copies are available. The calendar task can use an instructor demonstration account or a paper simulation. No real purchases, private records or paid AI account are needed.
Between Meetings
Optional: repeat one class task with fictional data and note where you need help. Save your worksheets and assessment results before leaving a shared computer.
